 Lucky #7 - Quandary

Quandary Peak
May 17th, 2008
Route: East Ridge
Round Trip: ~7 miles
Elevation Gain: ~3500'
covfrrider, Keith & Kim

The climb:
This was my 7th 14er, on May 17th, was a 7 mile round trip... and this is trip report 2121, which is divisible by 7. 7 just seems to be everywhere!

I arrived at the trail head at 6:30am and started up the road at 6:45. Most of Piker's group were already on the trail ahead of me. At tree line, I caught up with Keith and Kim, a nice couple from the Front Range. Keith was skinning on Tele's and Kim was snowshoeing with her snowboard on her pack. I chose to boot pack the whole route.

A world of Blue and White

It was another spectacular Colorado day. At one point during the climb, the air was completely still. It's an incredible feeling to be at 13,800 feet and experience that total calm.

The summit:

I summitted at 10:40, Keith was a few minutes ahead, and Kim a few minutes behind. I had unknowingly passed Piker and part of his group on the ridge. We all had our introductions on the summit, enjoyed some snacks and took in an incredible day.

Some scenics:

The LCBD, DLCB, BLCD... whatever group

The Sawatch with La Plata center stage

The Elks on the Horizon, hard to believe this is after the middle of May!

Grays and Torreys!

Mt Silverheels behind Hoosier Ridge

The descent:

Keith, Kim and myself headed off for the east face. Sastrugi and variable wind pack for the top 300 feet, then some of the sickest, sweetest butter cream I've ever turned on. We hit the "window" dead on and the conditions were optimal. Any later and soggy mashed taters...

We bombed off with Kayla and Aley in tow... what a great pair of climbing/skiing dogs!

The east face, our tracks were the first of the day and fursthest right in the photo

Check out the Conga Line! How many can you count?

We were able to make it all the way to within 150 yards of the cars, as we bushwhacked off the ridge and found the old Monte Cristo Mine road. We had to walk a couple of short sections, as it was melting fast!

Another great day on a 14er... and some new friends! Thanks Keith, Kim, Aley and Kayla. Look forward to getting out with you guys again. And thanks to Piker for putting this togther. Good meeting all of you!

a lot of people out on a mid-May day, I was also surprised to see a couple groups up in Lake Como, good to see the snow isn‘t holding anyone back.

Bookpacking at all day is tiring, good stuff.
