Mt. Monadnock (white mtns) |
First off i would like to say sorry for the lack of pictures, but i managed to forget to put batteries in my camera and it was dead about 15 minutes into the hike. (I attached a pic I found online to give an idea of the mountain.)
Anyway, i visited my dad in NH last weekend to tour some colleges and decided to go for a climb.
Now for the real TR:
After sleeping in to around noon due to getting home dreadfully late after the red sox game friday, i dragged my dad out of bed and we hit the trailhead around 2 pm. The climb starts very moderately on an extremely gentle slope, until it starts to gradually steepen and the terrain turns to mostly rocks about the size of beach balls. You continue down this segment of the hike for about 5 minutes or so until you come to some much steeper terrain. This section is also composed of mostly large rocks, now turning into large slabs, which form walls. You continue up this steeper section and eventually reach an opening in the trees where you get a spectacular view to the south. After continuing up and up the rocks it opens up for about 200 yards where you can stand and get a little exposure, and take pictures of the great view to the south. From here it isn‘t too far to the summit; you continue climbing through the trees until it steepens a bit and you eventually pop out onto the summit of Mt. Monadnock, which offers 360 degree views, which are spectacular. You can see many other mountains off to the north and a few to the south, and even mt. Washington off in the distance. The descent was also very fun, and a little taxing on the knees for my dad (poor guy haha).
Overall we had a great day, on a beautiful mountain. I would highly recommend this hike to anyone who is in new hampshire.
