Grays Peak - Standard Route from I-70

Trailhead: Bakerville
Route: Grizzly Gulch, to Stevens Gulch, and along the standard trail to Grays Peak.
Miles: 12
Feet: 4,400
Hours: 8

This was a good day for winter climbing. Clear and sunny, but cool, with frequent wind gust. Road to standard trail is well packed from hikers, skiers, a snowmobiles - snowshoes were not necessary. They were needed on standard trail to at least 13,200' (signage on the main ridge to the summit). There were seven in our group, with five reaching the summit. The entire trip was a real workout. This was a CMC sanctioned outing.

Good report! I know a lot of us were wondering what the road condition was like.
Did you do Grays first?

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the report on your climb. Do you carry an ice axe or use crampons? It sounds like you made it to the summit with snowshoes and good clothing. Is that correct?
Thanks
David

I was one of the two that did not reach the summit. The cold air was seizing up my lungs. I have always had a hard time with winter climbing. My mates who did make the summit were still wearing their snowshoes above 13,200‘.
Unless you are on solid glacier-type snow in Colorado, crampons are not useful. And crampons, along with ice axes, are only practicle on steep ascents. Not the case here. I do carry my axe on off-route traverses. - Andy

This is just what I was looking for. It seems that the standard route is fairly stable (unless it‘s changed). What do you think about ski conditions?
