Massive - Early Morning |
Don‘t remember the exact date, but this is close. My buddy and I hiked to less than half a mile from the trail up Massive. Awoke in a snow cloud, which wwas cool cuz the snoww didn‘t fall, just hung in the air... Anyway, got up with oatmeal and coffee at about 4am, and made the start of the trail by 5. It was dark, so we definately used heaqdlamps, but I couldn‘t really see anything anyway. The sun started to come up by the time we hit 12,000 feet. Leadville‘s lights looked pretty awesome from the slopes. Took some good pictures. Made 13,000 by sunrise, so we stopped and ate some trail mix and hit some energy goo. Feeling good, we made another 500 foot gain and managed to watch the sun rise again! By the time we reached the end of the hike, it was very cold. The wind was incredible, I‘d say about 50-60 mph at some times, only because it was comparablr to sticking my head out the car at the same speed. With numb hands, made a quick summit, got a good panoramic photo(will try to upload) and made it down quickly. Saw 3 other groups heading up Massive on our way down, but we summited at 8, which is probably when most of the other groups thought about starting. We only saw 2 people above 13,000 when we left. Not bad for a couple flatlanders!
