 Quandary - East ridge

Anton, Shari , Dan and myself slugged up Quandarys east ridge on Presidents day weekend.
The four of us left the parking lot at the TH at 7:30.
skinned up to 13k where we were forced to boot pack over some windblown rocky terrain for a couple hundred yards,
with our skis and boards strapped to our packs we must have looked like a bunch of drunks blowing around in the wind.
After the rocks we put our skis back on and started up the last 1000 vertical, where partially because of the grade and also due to the windblown ridge we kept sliding backwards, some ski crampons would have helped a whole lot.
after taking our time and struggling up the last part to the top we finally summited around 12:30, later than expected but still perfectly fine.
Half an hour later after enjoying the views, converting to downhill mode and getting whacked by some 60 mph gusts we started off the summit.

After traversing back along the ridge line to where it was steep enough to ski, we dropped in to the windblown bowl to the north of the ridge,
took some nice turns down until traversing back to the ridge line and taking off are gear to walk back across the rocks.

Once we got to treeline we went down the western (right) side of the obvious gully which led us back to the road, and after 100 yds on the plowed road (riding not walking) we were back at our cars

Things are looking up!     02/26/2008 01:10
Looks like the longer you stuck it out the clearer the sky got. Seems you may have even had a decent view? Congratulations.

That looks like a super fun day. Would you recommend it? I‘m considering trying to snowshoe/snowboard Quandary by the East Ridge this weekend. Also, how stable was the snow? See any avalanches?

the snow was pretty stable when we were up there, it was after a couple good warm days without any new snow and the snow pack appeared to have stabilized quite a bit.
it was a great day and I do recommend it, however packing your board on your back will be very unpleasant if there is more than a little wind, and being summit county its quite likely that it will be windy.

have fun up there if you choose to go for it

Those ridge pics just look cold. I‘m planning to ascend this route March 8th. Looks like a blast!
