West Spanish Peak - October snow

I scheduled Monday off from work with the intention of solo hiking West Spanish Peak but I wasn't too sure what the snow conditions would be after Sunday's snow. I decided a late start would be to my advantage and left Pueblo at 9:30 am. There were some snow packed spots on Cordova pass but the traveling was good and I arrived at the West Ridge trailhead at 11:30. The temperature was 31 F and I had noticed on the drive that clouds were passing over the summit quickly. I loaded my pack with wind protection and headed off. The first part of the trail was beautiful with the evergreens holding a dusting of snow. The lower ridge was dry and snow free, being on the sunny and leeward side of the mountain. The trail up was good and the cairns were an aid. There was some snow approaching the top but almost no ice. On the very top there was a snow accumulation of about 6 inches, but it did not require gaiters. The weather was perfect and the hike took about 5 hours.

The Spanish peaks are the first big mountains I encounter when I drive up for my hiking trips. They are gorgeous mountains. How would you rank them as far as difficulty? they look like they would be at least a level 2 to my relatively inexperienced opinion.

I have not hiked East Spanish Peak yet. West Spanish Peak is class 2. Occasionally you might use your hands for balance. I've hiked other 13ers along with Mt. Democrat and Mt. Lincoln. Looking at your profile, if you want to climb it you won't have any trouble. I think the snow made it more visually interesting. Here is some trivia, the Spanish Peaks can be seen near the end of the 1973 film ”Badlands”, starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek. Filmed in Las Animas and Otero counties.
