 Long hard Slog

Climbed La Plata from the the Southeast Ridge on Sat Oct 6. Must disagree with Roach‘s evaluation that this is easier than the north route. The "Beautiful valley" has lots of mud in it The "steep slope" is like climbing up and down in sand. We did summit and checked off the 5th highest. Mostly a good weather day. Very windy up top though (50+ mph). My advice is to go the north route, it‘s a bit longer but a lot easier. The road from Winfield is definitely a higher clearance road.

I agree with the Winfield approach. A beatiful climb but definitely not easy. My wife and I loved it since we did not see another person until we reached the summit. We just started climbing this summer and we've already figured out that the only thing Roach's book is good for is to get you to the trail head!
