Longs Peak - turned back by snow

A great start at 4am under a nearly full moon . Made it to the Keyhole in 3 1/2 hrs....a front / clouds were coming over the ridge...but we kept pushing. Into big gusts, blowing snow .....but with an adreniline push we made it 3/4 way up the Trough ......when a "clue bird" landed on us and said "turn around". Image Image

Snowing and huge winds in the trough don't make a good equation when scrambling up rocks on a steep pictch rock !! On the way back to the keyhole, visibility was so low, we couldn't see the trail makers (Colorado flag markers).. and headed for the "false keyhole". Doubled back, went lower, and made it.... halfway through the boulder field the weather calmed down, and we just had a long haul back.

We did see others who started earlier and did make it to the summit....but also we passed several others who turned around (before we turned around).

Lesson:
(a) When you start saying "I wish I had ski goggles so I could see in the snowstorm" .... you should probably stop going up.
(b) they'll be (at least) a little snow up there now....I'd say even on a good day, it'll slick.

All the best...
