9/21/07 Friday after work (3:30 pm) Chris Gardenheir and myself headed for the San Juans with the goal of climbing Mount Sneffels and San Luis Peak. Wasn't sure if the weather was going to hold long enough to do either. We reached Yankee Boy Basin trailhead at about 1130 that night. The stars were in full show with an occassional meteor streaking across the sky. 9/22/07 We got up at about 6:00 ate breakfast and packed for the morning's excersion. At 6:30 we were on the trail. When we reached the trail register the mountains were beginning to light up a little. Here's Gilpin Peak at Sun-up.  Looking up Lavendaer Col. Lots and lots of loose rock!  Sneffels SW ridge.  Looking Back at Blue Lakes Pass and Gilpin Peak  Blue Lakes Pass from a little higher up.  Looking Down on Yankee Boy Basin.  Before reaching Lavender Col we started up one of the "Birthday Chutes." Here's a view from the bottom of the one we chose.  The Chute itself was full of loose rubble at the angle of repose. This wasn't much fun so we took to the more solid rock. This took the ascent from class 2 to 3&4 really fast. Note to self (bring helmet next time.) There was a bit of exposure from time to time and had to be on constant watch for falling rock. Here I am climbing up the chute.  Half-way up the chute looking back across the valley.  Chris catching his breath on top of one of the knobs.  A little more than halfway up the chute looking down at Lavender Col.  The Summit at last!  Chris on the home stretch.  Chris on the summit of his first Colorado 14er!  This was definitely one of the more enjoyable 14ers to summit. The view in all directions was superb!!! View towards Dallas Peak and Blue Lakes.  View Towards Blue Lakes.  View to south (Wrights Lake & Gilpin Peak.  View into Blaine Basin.  Lavender Col from Summit.  Blue Lakes Pass  Our descent was via the class 2 chute leading directly to Lavender Col. A much easier route by a long shot. We made it back to the truck at 10:00am. Looks like I'm unable to attach more images so I'll continue with Uncompahgre on another report. Until then...
