 Handies group

Better late than never I guess....here's some pics from our Handies trip a couple of weeks ago. Now that I figured out how to do this trip report business I can do them a bit faster. Walt Barker and myself went out to do the Handies group Sept 8th & 9th...so here it goes.....

9/8/07 - When we arrived at trailhead at 1:00am we through our sleeping bags out onto the ground and crashed. By the time we woke later in the morning we were covered with a thick layer of frost. Here's Walt staggering around trying to see through his glasses.

After a little grub we started at Silver Creek trailhead at 7:30.

We summitted Recloud around 10:00am.

The summit of Redcloud and the connecting ridge to Sunshine were very windy. Once we reached the summit of Sunshine we had reprieve from the wind.

From Redcloud we dropped off the NW side down to the ridge leading to Sun Dog.

The ridge leading to Sun Dog was definitely the best part of the trip. There's a short scramble stretch above the saddle to get on top of the ridge.

We arrived back at trailhead at about 4:30 that afternoon. Now it was time to head for Handies.

9/9/07 - The night before we drove up the jeep road to about a mile below the American Basin trailhead. This was about as far as we dared taking Walt's car. By morning Walt wasn‘t feeling very good, so I was on my own going up Handies. I headed up the American Basin trail at 7:00am.

No more battery power...gone through 2 sets of batteries already. Cold and digital cameras don‘t go good together. Guess I'll have to start buying the good ones for the digital camera. From Handies I drop down the ridge and up to Whitecross Mountain. The ridge is a nice hike. The summit of Handies and across to Whitecross was very windy. Had to keep moving to stay warm. I was back at the car around 10:45am.

It's now Friday...getting near the end of the school day. Hopefully the weather holds for the weekend to do Mt. Sneffels.

Hey Igura!

It was a pleasure meeting you on Sunshine. After the cold windy stretch going up Redcloud and across to Sunshine, the calmness on Sunshine was very nice. The siesta felt great!!

Happy Trails!

Hi. Iguru here. I met you guys on Sunshine's summit on 9/8. You two were laying back soaking up the sun or catching a few zzzzzz's when I summitted solo. We talked for a while about Vernal and how the hotels are always full nowadays with mining industry workers. I had said that the huge hotels were numerous, but rarely full. Remember?. Anyway, I didn't know you were 14ers.com members. I have many of the same photos you got. Nice meeting you and keep on hiking!
This is me on Sneffels in case you don't remember.
