We wanted to make this hike a bit more interesting, so we started at the Alpine Loop out of Silverton. The first part of this crests a saddle at something just over 13,000', then drops into American Basin and then up to the summit.

Just as we came down from the saddle, we looked back and saw this "bachelor herd" of wapiti. We hadn't seen them coming up, but they were certainly interested in us!

Heavy storm clouds were building just as we reached the summit so after a few quick pictures, we headed down. Coming down from the saddle, we hiked through a magnificent hail storm!
