Harvard - North Cottonwood / Horn Fork Basin

Yet another great weekend to be up at 14K! Harvard was lucky 36 for me.

We approached the trailhead in a Tacoma and a Wrangler and were thankful we did. Some poor couple we passed along the way tried it in a 4-door with undesirable results. Sorry mates! Dug your own hole there...good luck with that. Who said they got a Civic up there? Yikes.

We rolled in Friday afternoon to camp up at Horn Fork Basin (me in the middle).

Bear right to Bear Lake.
Someone left an angry message in the trail register about poor signage at this junction. What do you think?
(Sorry man)

Harvard! Not exactly an "alpine start" though...

We were thinking about doing the traverse to Columbia today...

As determined as we were (tired) and as nice as the weather was (thunderheads), we decided to save Columbia and the traverse for another day

We thought about visiting Bear Lake, but the clouds had other ideas.

Fire and ice! Guess those weren‘t just rain clouds! Nothing like huddling around a camp fire under a tarp in a hailstorm to rouse your spirits Better here than up on the ridge though.

Homeward bound the next morning. Cold nights this time of year!

All in all a great trip. We didn‘t get the pair, but you can‘t control the weather. We did encounter one young soul who made the traverse early enough to avoid the clouds. Way to go girl! Props!

Ourselves? Guess we‘ll just have to go back and enjoy a backpacking trip to Horn Fork one more time. Shucks.
