Redcloud/Sunshine - Silver Creek |
My friend Gordy and I drove from Topeka/KC on 8/25, all the way to the Silver Creek / Grizzly Gulch trailhead, a 13.5 hour trip. It was a beautiful drive once we got past Canon City - it was the first time for both of us on that stretch of US 50 through the Arkansas River valley, over Monarch Pass, and through Gunnison. The drive to Lake City and the trailhead was excellent too, with the Lake Fork - Gunni running through there. The dirt road to the trailhead was fine and we made it in good time with my '04 Honda Accord. We met our friend, Adam, who came from Phoenix over Cinnamon Pass in his Forerunner (he had no problems with the pass). The 3 of us started hiking the Silver Creek trail on 8/26 at 6:30 and summitted Redcloud at 9:30. There were excellent views from the summit of Redcloud, especially of Wetterhorn and Uncompaghre to the north. (Those 2 mountains might have to be our adventure next summer...) We did the traverse over to Sunshine in about 45 minutes, and then evaluated whether to descend the scree from the saddle. We decided against it, due to the steepness and the sign advising us against it. So we re-traced our steps over Redcloud. Round-trip back to the trailhead in about 7.5 hours. We didn't have too many problems with the sudden-ness of the altitude change from Kansas/Arizona - we tried to keep hydrated and had some Excedrin and Aleve on hand. We then climbed Handies on 8/27 (see my Handies trip report) and headed back to Kansas/Arizona. Gordy and I broke up the trip home with an overnighter in CO Springs on 8/27. Great trip!!
