 Donner Ridge

Photos: http://www.leachfam.com/securearea/subcategory.php?subcategoryid=85

On the way up we followed Roach‘s description and gained Donner Ridge about halfway up past a couple of notches (passing not for from the place where the ranger died in 2005). This route left us dissappointed because it was virtually all class-2. We decided on the way down to try and descend the ridge all the way. We quickly found out why Roach doesn‘t advocate this variation as we could not find a way past a cliff band into the highest major notch. We finally threw in the towel and descended a rather serious gully to get down off the ridge.

The views down into the Spectacle Lakes Cirque are incredible - makes me want to climb Blitzen Ridge and Y Couloir.

More class 3 on the ridge itself?     2012-07-29 07:55:12
I just did Donner Ridge yesterday from Spectacle Lakes and found plenty of Class 3+ scrambling by trying to stay on the ridge itself for the entire length. Maybe being mostly class 2 just happened.
