Full Moon Fever / Sunrise Summit |
I am writing this report to suggest one thing to all forum users HIKE UNDER A FULL MOON and WATCH A SUNRISE. For the past two years of hiking 14ers I have wanted to do this hike and experience this event and I was not let down.
On Monday morning at 0030 I met Cloudhiker in the parking lot and we started ascending up towards Grays. I am a slow hiker, a mile an hour, a thousand feet an hour, I slow down at higher elevation to keep my heart-rate under control and watch out for my asthma. We had our headlamps but did not need them minus a half hour because the moon illuminated Stevens Gulch like an overpowered floodlight.

We made the summit after 0400 to see the views here of northwest Denver Metro area. Sorry it's a little blurry, it was windy up top.

I have to say that this is one of the most spiritual experiences of my life. I always made it a point when on vacation to watch the sunrise. I have watched it from many states and a few different countries. Only the morning of 9/12/01 in Australia in Queensland in Surfers Paradise (it was 9/11 in the US) beat this one.
No matter what goes on, nothing is more beautiful than the sunrise on a new day, and seeing it from 14,270' beats anything that is happening in the world below. I highly suggest that everyone try this at least once, it was amazing!!!!!!!!

I bagged Grays last year after a late start and could not bag Torreys because of weather. I know people have taken this photo before (when I wanted to post it, I saw it was taken three weeks ago, but I really like it.)

Giving the thumbs up on Torrey's I finally got both done in one day after a few attempts.

My "I've bagged them pose" After a couple of years of hiking and my fair skin I have taken a liking to using Jersey's as part of my "layering" When I got home I had my Colorado Rockies Hockey Jersey delivered which will be my official 14er Summit Jersey. We all have our traditions and this is mine for this year on out.
