Mt Bross and "South Bross" via West Slopes from Kite Lake
07 July 2007
Road to Kite Lake: Easy dirt, passable by 2wd normal clearance car. Kite Lake road is the very poorly marked road in Alma across from the Alma Bar (which is closed now).
Trailhead: We camped at kite lake, arrived in the dark, left in the dark, set up a tent in the parking lot at kite lake. There is a $7.00 fee for camping--but we didn't see anyone enforcing this fee, and really there are no services, so I'm not sure why they charge this fee?
Starting Elevation: 12,000 feet
Start Time: 0330
Reach South Bross Summit at 0550
Reached Bross Summit at 0600
Left Summit at 0630
Arrived at car at 0730 (yes that's right, 2+ hours up, 1 hour down )
Total Time: 4:00
Last week we hiked Democrat, Cameron, and Lincoln but started at the Montgomery Reservoir making our hike long and we had decided to skip Mt Bross. So, we had returned for a quick hike up and down.
We arrived at Kite Lake at about 10pm blasting Guns-n-Roses, drinking 40's, and packen' a car full of chicks Just Kidding. Actually, we arrived, late, tired, and ready to set up camp. We set the tent up behind the parked car in the parking lot because we really just couldn't get a lay of the land in the dark.
We were going to have a little fire, but there is no wood, and you are above trees at Kite Lake, so your best bet is to bring some fire wood. We were going to burn our Colorado 14ers by Roach for warmth but decided instead to watch an episode of house on crazydiamon80's dvd player. Anyone else love House as much as me?
Well, it was time to turn it in. I slept in the tent with clouddust and crazydiamond80 slept in his nice warm car. I say this because I'm the dumbA** that forgot his sleeping bag. I put every freaking peace of clothing on--it didn't matter, I still froze all night. I secretly wondered if cloudust just thought this was a ploy to get in her sleeping bag--but she held strong and seemed to enjoy my tonic-clonic jerking from fits of cold, followed by fits of full bladder all night long.
We had intended to get up at 0230 and reach the summit early enough to see the sunrise but because crazydiamond80 was so cozy warm in his truck, he overslept until 0330. Me, I froze until he woke up and shook the tent. I know, serves me right--would you believe this is the SECOND time I forgot my sleeping bag though. Fortunately I was given the gift of "a little extra hair" to keep me warm.
My wifes "waxer" thinks I'm a seven, but I'm really just a 3 but that's another story (inside joke )
Anyway, we left camp at 0330 and it was SO dark, it was hard to find the trail. Based on Roach we wanted to stay on the northern side of the drainage all the way up the west slope. In the dark we tried to stay high and gained elevation quickly but as the sun rose, we could see that we were actually zigging and zagging a bit.
It would be MUCH faster and more direct to stay in the drainage hugging the little river. There is a trail most of the way up.
We arrived at the Summit of South Bross and then scooted over to finish watching the beautiful sun rise over the summit of Mt Bross. We ate breakfast in the warmth of the sun, and friendship and promptly headed directly back down the drainage and were back at the car within an hour. We arrived back at the car before most people seemed to have even gotten out of their tent!
Great fun---Oh, and since this is technically "off limits" territory. We didn't "actually" do this hike, but simulated it and meerly used photoshop for the pictures
Here are our pics with the Ascent labeled in Red and the Descent in Blue.
Next Up, Eolus, Windham, Sunlight
Until next time,
Jim (nutrition_guy), Jim (crazydiamond80), and Beth (cloudust)
