After hiking San Luis and Baldy Alto on Saturday, we took the advice of Garrett who we met on San Luis' summit and moved our camp near the Cebolla Trailhead. I had had it with my boots and elected to hike in my sandals for our ascent of Stewart Peak and Baldy Chato.
The first part of the trail winds up through the forest until you come to treeline and are faced with a vast sea of willows. Luckily, there are poles marking a path through the bushes which we followed up the slope.
When the willows ended, we turned and headed up toward the summit of Baldy Chato where we got a look at Stewart Peak for the first time. From here, we traversed a gentle ridge for a while and then dropped down into the basin a bit to head directly for the saddle. This was a mistake as the basin was soggy and wet; we elected to run the ridge all the way around on our return trip.

At the saddle, we made our way up the slopes to the false summit.
There were butterflies and tons of flowers on the summit of Stewart, it was really amazing.
On our descent, we saw a herd of elk, a few deer, and one moose in the distance on a ridge. I highly recommend this hike for the solitude, surroundings, and wildlife. It's also a great hike for those who might want to venture a bit from the trails and do some route-finding on easy terrain.
