Evans / Spalding via Chicago Creek (Echo Lake)

This was actually a couple miles longer than I anticipated. My GPS Odometer clocked 8 miles up starting at the campground at Echo Lake. Started at 5:50 and reached the summit at 9:45. The trail is in good shape with a few snow fields left to cross around Chicago lakes and again near the top of Spalding. A good trail above Chicago lakes has been made evident using colored ground feathers that will take you just above Summit Lake to the NorthWest Trail.

The weather moved in extremely quick once I was on top of the peak. I decided to start running down the paved road back to Summit Lake instead of taking my return route back to Spalding. I‘m glad I made that decision due to the static buildup and the lightning surrounding the area (the metal road markers were singing very loud with static). 3 nice old ladies picked my dog and I up on the road and dropped us off at the summit lake shelter so that I could wait out the storm before heading back into Chicage Creek Basin.

I reached my vehicle at Echo lake at 1:20 (making for a 7.5 hour R/T). I was running many portions of the trail up and most if it down and stopped for about 10 minutes during the Ascent so you might want to add a little more time to your trip if you are hiking only.

Great route and good trail in most sections. Sorry, no pictures available as I was going very light for running purposes.
