Just wanted to give you all the heads up! My husband and I attempted a ski/ride descent of La Plata on Wednesday the 13th, and unless you plan on going today...I would leave the skis/boards in the car. We ended up making it to about 13,000 before deciding the snow wasn‘t worth it. On the way up to the summit we met another guy who had summitted and skiied a bit, and he advised we ditch our skis--not enough good snow left.

Response to "snow condition question"

Hey--By the end of this month (if the weather continues as is) there would be no need for crampons. We post-holed a few times, but the snow was quite sparse and really, really wet/soggy. I think it must've been at least 65/70 degrees up there yesterday, and the snow was melting like crazy. The ridgline up to the summit had snow, but within a week or so I would think most of it will be melted off.

Snow condition question
2/5/2011 12:22am
cara,

Could you give a brief description of the snow conditions? Would crampons be required, or can one avoid the snow altogether? I was thinking of going at the end of this month.

Thanks,
sgest
