 Castle Peak Northeast Ridge

This was a first real snow climb for both me and trishapajean. We started at the first stream crossing on the Castle Creek road (approx. 10,160 ft.). We donned crampons at about 11,000 ft., but took them off for a while to negotiate the bare rocks on the road.
At the end of the road (approx. 12,800 ft.) we put the crampons back on and climbed the snow field to the upper basin. We baked in the bright morning sun, wishing for lighter clothing. At the lip of the upper basin, we made the decision to ascend the NE ridge, rather than the NW ridge (our original plan), because it looked easier. It wasn‘t. It was challenging and we didn‘t get to the summit until well past noon. However, the weather held mainly fair.
We descended the NW ridge--much easier even though it is steeper than the NE ridge. At that point, we had to decide, reluctantly, to bail on adding Conundrum; it would just have made too long a day, since family members would have been worrying about us.
We did our first glissading, first down off the ridge into the upper basin, and then down the "glacier" to near where we re-gained the road. By that time, we were doing a fair amount of post holing in the sun-softened snow.
All in all, a great adventure, although it left us both tired. Fourteener #28 for me, #23 for trishapajean, and a start on the Elk Range 14ers for both of us. Pictures are at:

Thanks, Kevin. I'm sure you attempted it under more wintry conditions than we faced, though! My biggest disappointment was that we had to forego Conundrum, so I, at least, will certainly be going back before too long. (And imagine my surprise when we accidentally ”ran into” you the next weekend, too!)

Congrats on your first Elk 14er, Patrick and Trisha! It took me 3x to get Castle. One attempt was near the same time as your climb. Looks like there's less snow than 2 years ago in Montezuma Basin.
