Mt. Antero Trip Report 06/11/2007

Antero from Baldwin Gulch Jeep Road - 06/09/07
Mountains: Mt. Antero (14,269') Route: Started at 11,400'on the Jeep Road and climbed the standard route to summit. Stats: Elevation Gain - 3000' (approx) Roundtrip Mileage - 7.5 miles (approx) Roundtrip Time - 4:50 There's not a whole lot to say about the standard route on Antero. I left Boulder at 3:30AM and got to the base of the Jeep road by 6:50AM. The Jeep road was a lot of fun and I reached where snow blocked the Jeep road at about 7:20AM. The road is a little narrow but most Jeeps/Trucks should be able to make it all the way up. I ate a banana and was on the trail by 7:40AM. I decided not to carry snowshoes, gaiters or crampons. There are isolated snow banks on the road that can be skirted rather easily.x This gully provides an easy alternative to the rather tiresome switchbacks (picture taken later in the day during my return). If you decide to follow the road all the way up to the Southwest ridge though, you will encounter snow banks every so often that obscure the road. I got on the elevated plateau common to the SW ridge and N. Carbonate's ridge at around 8:40AM. Here I took a long break, ate breakfast and hydrated. There was a swarm heading up to summit on Saturday and the weather was great. Here's beta on the ridge up North Carbonate. I followed the road around the SW ridge and made my way up to point 13,800'. Here's a picture of the ridge up to the summit There is very little snow on the summit ridge. Here's a fun little tower to scramble around I summitted at 10:05AM. Here are some scenics... Princeton looking bone dry... Looking back down at the ridge I met these ladies on the trail and promised I would post their summit photo here... I stayed on summit for a while and started making my way down. I got back down to where I'd parked by about 12:30PM. Here's one of the snow banks lower down on the trail. I packed up and started back down the road by 1PM. This snow bank blocks the road but one can drive up a bit further by driving up these rocks to the right. Driving back down the road was a lot of fun. It's a little narrow though and this Jeep needed to back up by about 200 yards to find a pull off since there was another truck behind me. Here's what the creek crossing looks like. I was a little pissed that the creek washed all the dirt and mud off my Jeep. I go for the unkempt look

cpittman	Great Report 11/30/2010 5:28pm Thanks for the great pictures! We are thinking about taking a 2-wheel drive Tahoe up to the creek crossing on Saturday. Are there many places to pull off the road to park if we can't make it? Do we need 4x4 or just clearance? Thanks!
