 Bierstadt

This was my fourth time up Bierstadt, but my first with snow.

Made it up the newly opened Guanella Pass with no problems.

Tested out the new bathrooms and found a big snowdrift in the women's bathroom.

Jen and I started on the trail at 5:45 a.m. Temps were cool. Snow was frozen and packed.

There was a beautiful sunrise, looking back toward Georgetown.

Some sections of the trail were muddy -- frozen in the morning; sloppy later on.

Some of the snow sections had some deep postholes from previous hikers. Looked more like crevasses.

Here's a shot of the creek. The social snow trail was just to the right of this shot.

Here's a shot I took of the moon on the way up.

Climbing up the snow was nice. It was pretty packed.

Climbing toward the summit here. Didn't really need the ice axes, but they were comforting on the hard, icy snow. Good for glissading, too.

Sat on the summit at 8:05 a.m. Here's Jen snacking on the summit.

The Sawtooth.

Temps got pretty cold. On the way down we found a big, wind-blocking rock and Jen warmed her feet on my stomach for a few.

Hiking down on the snow was rather pleasant. It was pretty firm and forgiving.

Passed by a small wedding party on their way up. Just missed the summit wedding!

Down lower, snow was getting slushier by the minute, but it was still pretty good. We only postholed a few times.

Made it back to the parking lot at 10 a.m.

Bierstadt may be an "easy" and "crowded" 14er, but it sure is beautiful.

Nice TR, looks like the Sawtooth should be about ready to go.
