 Horseshoe Mountain - Boudoir Couloir

Just a quick report and a few pics from Debby's and my Memorial Day climb of Horseshoe Mountain (13,898 ft. near Mt. Sherman) via the Boudoir Couloir…

It's a wonderful, moderate (max. angle – about 38 degrees) couloir which climbs up from the middle of the "Horseshoe"…a spectacular setting. Conditions were just about perfect with the snow being firm enough for good purchase with crampons and just soft enough to kick in nice steps.

Here's Debby on the approach hike with our objective as the background…

A cool little frozen stream along the way...

Here's Jeff on the approach with our line marked in red...

"The Horseshoe" is a spectacular place...

Jeff climbing in the lower part of the couloir...

Debby climbing near the top of the couloir...

The summit cabin...

Mt. Elbert from the summit...

Debby descending the northeast ridge with Mt. Sheridan in the backgound...

Conditions for glissading were optimal...

As you can tell by my smile...

On the descent we had to take one last shot of our ascent route...

All in all, an excellent trip. We left the skis at the vehicle but wished we had hauled them up as there were perfect "velvet corn" conditions. About 6 hours round trip.

Jeff
