 Princeton--overcoming fears

September 9th, I went back to Mt. Princeton, which I first climbed in 2003. This time, I accompanied my granddaughter, Amber, for her 5th 14er. It was important for her, because she had tried to make it her first 14er, back in '03, but we (and several other people) had turned back not far above the trailhead due to drifted, falling, and blowing snow. It left her with a dread of those snowy conditions.
This time, the day dawned clear but cold. We took the standard peakbaggers' route from the radio towers on the Mt. Princeton Road. By late morning, light snow was again falling above timberline. The wind was also coming in gusts that sometimes made us stop and turn away. Still, we made it up the slippery summit block. Amber finally got to stand (well, sit) triumphantly on top of Princeton, and the sun even came back out (mostly).
It wasn't a very fast trip (almost nine hours, altogether), but it was Amber's first 14er outing of the entire year, so that's understandable. It got a little dicey on those slippery rocks at times, but we both had a great day. Amber boosted her self-confidence, and I found out that the weather didn't really bother me, either. A repeat climb, but well worth it.
