 First Fourtenner - Pikes Peak

I moved to Colorado Springs on March 28, 2006 and Pikes Peak has been "taunting" me ever since. So, yesterday a buddy and me decided to make an attempt at the summit. Here is a brief synopsis:

06:15 AM Trailhead - The hiking was pleasant but not very exciting as we worked our way through the damp forest to the clearing just below tree line. As we ascended through the tree line and up to the ridge at 12,750‘, we saw why this was called the crux of the climb (with the exception of the final ascent). One couple passed us as we were hiking this portion. Easy walking greeted us on the other side of the ridge until we made it to the final rocky ascent. With the recent snow, this required a little more care than I expect to see at other times. We were again passed on this portion by a solo hiker with 32 14ers to his credit and very near the top met our first couple heading back down.

12:15 PM Summit - Asked by one lady if we had walked up and after our affirmative answer, all she could say was "Wow!" We got refreshments and re-filled water in the summit house (will not see this on any other 14ers).

01:00 PM Begin descent - Our legs and feet took a beating on the way down as we swore it was not this steep going up. We encountered freezing rain a few hundred yards from treeline and then rain once we entered the forest portion.

04:00 PM Trailhead - We made it! My first 14er and Chad‘s second. My wife was not ready mentally to attempt this one.
