I went down to climb Crestone Peak via the Cottonwood Creek trail. There are 2 private property signs at the trailhead now. The one sign has a phone number for The Manitou Foundation who owns the land for the first 1/2 mile of the trail. 719-256-4267 is their phone number. I went to their office in the Baca Grande condos #13 just out of Crestone and they had me fill out a form and they made a copy of my drivers license and said I was good to go. Although when I asked them where I could park, they would‘nt tell me, they seemed afraid to be liable. There is a parking lot just west of the big water tank and water treatment plant that we parked at and did‘nt have any problems with our cars. The trail head is just east of the water tank. We went up to just below Crestone Peak and camped on 08/24/06. It rained all night and we were socked in Friday morning so we came out that day and did‘nt try the peak. There are cairns up most of the trail these days so the route finding was a lot easier than in years past.
