Beware of potholes on Highway 82

My friend and I decided to wake up at 3:00am and drive from Gunnison, CO to the La Plata Trailhead on Highway 82. There were several incredibly large potholes heading west from Twin Lakes towards the trailhead, be warned!!!! They can literally destroy the rims of your car, blowout your tires, wreck your alighnment, damage your struts, and damage much much more to your car. Trust me, we experienced pothole hell!

After deciding to hike or not after encountering a pothole driving in the dark, we went up and summited La Plata Peak. It was the most well maintained trail I ever hiked on, with the exception of a few other trails I have done in some National Parks which were very popular hikes. But, as far a a fourteener trail, it was imaculent. I couldn‘t believe the work that was put into this trail, it was great.

After the treeline, I was surprised how long it took me to summit. I thought I was close, but behind every switchback or talus field there was more to climb. It was a stiff hike, but we got to the top. We called for help in trying to get back home due to the dreaded pothole incident, and after several hours, we got back to Gunnison with a story for the ages.

Awesome hike, but sucky highway conditions. The potholes make it a very dangerous road to drive on.
