I had been looking to climb a 14er for about six months before I set off the Colorado. I finally got my chance when some people I know and I decided to go to Colorado to whitewater raft for about 5 days. We also decided to fit one day in for a 14er. After much debate we settled on Yale.
The day of the climb we got up at about 5 am, although by the time we were ready to go it was about 6 am. Bad weather had been predicted, and we became aware of this during the 2 hour drive to the trailhead from Crested Butte. We hit the trail at about 8:15, a very bad time. Another kid and I took point and flew ahead of the others. Saw one frog on the way up, and we ate wild strawberries. After we made it above the treeline, the weather started to get worse. Everybody who we saw coming down said that we should not try the summit. One woman even said she had to backout 600 ft from the summit. Another said it was sleeting. My freind and I stopped and waited for someone else in our group to make a decision to saty or go. When he arrived, it started hailing, and we could not see the mountain anymore. We made the decision to go down. The others had not even made it above the treeline, when we met up. It was a sad day for so much anticipation. The highest we got was only 12,300 ft.
Well, I guess there is always next time.
