Torreys - Kelso Ridge and Grays combo

We were the first group on the trail at 5:20 AM and enjoyed the early morning peace and quiet before the crowds arrived. We arrived at the trail to Kelso Ridge just as the sun popped over the ridge to the east. What an amazing day to be in the mountains!

The flowers are in full bloom and taking advantage of their short growing season. This climb was well worth it just for the beauty of the wild flowers!

The climb up Kelso Ridge was fantastic! I really enjoyed this ridge route a lot. I managed to find some class 4 fun by taking the "wrong" side of the ridge on several occasions. Although there is some exposure on this route I rarely felt it with the exception of the short jaunt across the knife edge section. There is a lot of loose rock and scree in several places so be careful not to knock the rock loose. You may also need to watch out for rocks knocked loose by mountain goats. I observed one mountain goat knock several head sized rocks off the mountain as we were ascending.

It took our group 4 hours to reach the summit of Torreys via this route. Another hour to hike over to Grays and then about 2 hours back the car. We were glad we started early because it started raining just as we reached the parking area and we started hearing thunder and seeing lightning. I was surprised at the number of people we passed who were still heading up as the thunder and lightning started within a few miles.
