 Blanca - Como Road

Ty and I did Blanca Peak on June 1. We had both read quite a few trip reports regarding Blanca beforehand. Como Road was the issue. If we had to do it again (Ellingwood Point, for example) we would hike to Como Lake and spend the night and tackle Ellingwood or Blanca the next morning. I am sure that assessment doesn‘t surprise anyone. We were only able to get up about 2.5 miles up Como Road before we parked and hit the trail shortly after 6 am. Three hours later, we made Como Lake. We relaxed a bit and then hit the trail again for Blanca. We summited at 12:30pm. We were the only two up there that day. We didn‘t run into any other hikers during the day.

The trail was dry. It is amazing to look at Jaws 1, 2, 2.5. 3 and try to figure out how anyone makes it over those obstacles. A standard 4wd has no chance or at least isn‘t worth the risk to vehicle and personal safety.

We enjoyed the summit for about 30 minutes before heading down. The hike between Como Lake and our car was never ending and we said to each other more than a few times, "it would have been nice to have camped for a night at Como Lake." This was my 14th and Ty‘s 12th 14er. It was easily our most challenging and longest 14er hike to date.
