 S. Maroon Peak - S. Ridge

Drove to Aspen from Boulder starting at 1:30 am, arrived at the trailhead at 5. Hiked up to the bent tree campground in an hour and reached the 13,300' saddle at 7:30 (ya, I was moving). Saw a family of goats with the lucky surviving kid (I believe goats reproduce in twos and one usually dies). Hiking up the 2,800' from bent tree isnt bad and the route is clear, but the return is another story. The views of Snowmass and Capitol from the saddle are spectacular.

Continued up the remaining route, traversing ascending traversing ascending... rinse and repeat. The route isnt difficult to find in my opinion and is only slightly exposed. Many large cairns. However, in a bad storm, this section would be a nightmare. Hike early.

Honestly, come on people, it isnt that difficult to keep from knocking rocks down on any of these routes. Just be focused and think of the consequences of taking out a climber below. Think before you step.

I was the first to summit on the day at 8:40 am. Enjoyed the solitude as I caught my breath and my senses. The colors of the lush valleys and red/white rock makes this one of the best vantage points in Colorado. After about 50 mins I made my way back down passing several ascending parties. The hike back down from the 13,300' saddle to bent tree is a pain in the knees, bring your hiking poles. Back to the trailhead at 12:30. Round trip time: 6 hrs 40 mins without summit stay.
