Hiked San Luis On Saturday, June 18th. Drove in on Friday and camped at trailhead. There were a lot of people in the area and we were lucky enough to get there early and claim a good site right at the TH. On Saturday just after dawn we ran into a beaver and a moose while walking up Stewart Creek. Had to cross a few annoying snowfields on the way up San Luis but they were short. Summitted around 10:30ish and shared the summit with about 8 people! Since the day was young and the weather was perfect we decided to go for Organ Mtn which is a high 13er about 2 miles east of San Luis. Its called that because of the rock formations on it that look like organ pipes. The two mountains are connected by a ridge. The route across the ridge is described in Roachs 13er book. It is loose, crumbling rock with the crux of the route being a large gash in the ridge which you have to navigate down and around. There was a lot of exposure and we really took our time and followed Roachs directions very carefully. They are pretty accurate and if you get off course on this ridge it would be scary. After the ridge you have to scramble up a cool organ pipe gully on solid rock (finally!) to Organ Mtn summit. We were the first to sign the register there since last Sept. Decended Organs east slopes and ended up at the Eddieville TH, 0.3 mi from our camp.
