 Sherman 10 Sept

Hiked Sherman on Saturday 10 Sept, my first time up. We drove from Colorado Springs, had no trouble getting to the gate just below the Dauntless mine by 6am (Note: clearance is the issue on this part of the road - I didnt think four wheel drive was necessary, but I think a passenger car might have a hard time with the ruts and rocks). We started in the dark, but had a beautiful sunrise by the time we got to Hilltop. By the time we got up to the saddle, the wind was gusting pretty hard, so walking the ridgeline was a challenge! We summitted about 8:15, spent about 15 minutes on the summit then started down, still with a lot of wind. Made it back down to the gate by 10, and passed at least 20 people on their way up. Main lesson I drew was the need for windgear. I think I would have been all right in my fleece, but I was really glad to have Gore-tex jacket to stop the wind. Also wore my hat and gloves most of the way. Be prepared!
