7/24 Huerfano TH - Ridge route |
We camped at the Huerfano TH on Saturday evening. There was a truck that remained empty at the TH all night and it had a rope around it with a sign saying there was a search and rescue effort in process. We found this a little odd. We hit the trail the next mornng at 4:40am. Even though this is a relatively short hike I was hiking with my slooooow friend and I wanted to make sure we could summit safely. The first mile or two of the trail was fairly wet and muddy from the rain the day before. It was easy to follow in the dark. We were happy to reach the Lindsey - Iron Nipple saddle and get into the sunshine. After reading various posts and talking with some folks Id met at S. Colony Lakes last weekend who had climbed Lindsey the previous weekend I decided to take the ridge the entire way instead of dealing with the loose rock on the North face. This was a good choice - we saw about 6 other hikers and everyone took the ridge - some after giving the gully a try first. The crux of the route is a big crack near the top of the ridge which you climb up and around (on the left). There was a little exposure but it wasnt bad. After a false summit or two we were on the top and shared the summit with two nice guys and a very in shape 60+ year old woman whose friend had given up. She was celebrating #40. We socialized for a bit and then headed back down since the weather was getting ugly. The weather held until we got below treeline at which time it started hailing. Round trip time was a pathetic 10.5 hours! I was dissappointed not to get over to the Iron Nipple and Huerfano Peak, especially since if I was alone I could have easily done all three in less time than it took to do Lindsey alone! After so many cool and challenging hikes this month it was so frustrating to walk as slow as I could possibly imagine and still have to stop and wait all the time. I never broke a sweat. All in all, a very fun hike though. On the way out we saw a freshly posted sign near the TH and it sent chills down our spines. A woman was asking if anyone had found the backpack of her husband who had died in a climbing accident on Blanca the week before.
