| Our 1st 14er - June 18, 2005 |
My 11 1/2 yr. old son, Matthew, and I made our first 14er climb on Saturday, June 18.  I know, we climbed perhaps the easiest one, but that was the idea. We are new to Colorado and have done a lot of hiking, but never above 10,000 ft., so it was quite a thrill.
The day was absolutely beautiful. We left the trailhead at 6:45 am and reached the summit about 9:15. We took our time, adjusting to the air, etc. We had no real problems at all, though we really started to suck air at 13,000 ft. The temperature at the summit was an amazing 59 degrees. One 14er vet at the summit, who said hes climbed all 54 14ers, said hes never seen a better day on a 14er summit, so I guess we picked a great day to climb our 1st.
The trial was quite busy, especially on the descent. There were well over 100 on the trail. There is still a bit of snow above 12,500 ft. and we sank to our knees a few times, but no big deal.
Not that anyone cares except my son, but we started 1/2 mile below the trailhead to make 3,000 ft. elevation gain.
