 Mt. Democrat 3-4-06

This weekend I went and attempted to hike all three, but I decided against that and I only did Mt. Democrat. On the drive up to Kite Lake I got about 3.5 miles before the road was blocked with snow. I then had to park and hike 2.5 miles to the trailhead.

I arrived at the trailhead about 8 in the morning and started to go for Democrat. Anyway, not being up there before I kind of just scouted the area and attempted what I thought was the trail. I would find it at times and then lose it at other times. Anyway, the wind was pretty brutal up there, but it was not too cold. I contined up the slope at a decent pace, but having to boulder hop did take some time. Near the summit the wind was very strong and I had to drop down a few times to not be blown over.

Well, I did make it to the summit and snapped a few pictures and then heading down. I was back at the saddle between Democrat and Lincoln when I decided that I should probably just make that a day and head on back. My reasoning was 1) There were clouds rolling in and I didnt want to get caught in anything. 2) The thought of having to do the extra 2.5 miles back to the car was not making me too happy. 3) I was alone and was not too sure how long it would take me to make it all the way around the peaks and I didnt want to get stuck out there. Therefore, I headed down and made it back to the car around 1:30.

As for any suggestions. First, would be prepared to walk the extra 5 miles roundtrip just to get to the trailhead. Second, I did not bring and axe, but it would have been useful at some points. Third, snowshoes will save you some time. You dont have to have them, but there were points in which I was glad I had them.

Overall, it was a good day, however I wish I could have made all of them. The extra miles really did not excite me, but that is what you deal with in winter climbing! There will always be another day to do them.
