Mt. Elbert Hike on 8/20 - Halfmoon Creek TH

Hiked with 9 other members of church hiking group. Started hike at 8AM. Hiking party quickly split into 3 groups, based on skill level. Another experienced hiker (30+ 14er summits) and I reached the summit at 10:30AM. Stayed at summit for about an hour and then made our descent, reaching the TH at 1:30. Skies were partly cloudy over the mountain all morning and then clouded up around noon. Heard a couple thunder claps but no lightning present. We hiked with a very light rain the last mile to the TH.

Great views of the surrounding ranges. Around 50 or so folks on the peak. We passed several folks making their descent. Saw several pikas but no marmots. We were under careful scrutiny of several scrub jays during our rest break below treeline. I was somewhat disappointed with all the food (Snickers Bar and gorp container) and several water bottles that certain groups left - I assume they elected to lighten their packs on the ascent and hope that they retrieved their potential trash on the way back to the TH.

IMO this was one of the easier 14er hikes I have made and I feel blessed to have made it to the top of the highest point in CO. The Elbert massif is certainly breathtaking and a joy to behold. What more can one say besides - WOW!!!
