Tour de Crystal
Plans for Tour d'Abyss fell through, so Brian (beburke30) and I hiked Mt. Helen (13,164), Father Dyer Peak (13,615), Crystal Peak (13,852) and Peak 10 (13,633) around the Crystal Lakes near Breck.

The class 3 traverse from Helen to Dyer was fun. Worst part of the hike was the grassy slope up Helen that brought back memories of the never ending 'Poltergeist' hallway.

From the 4wd TH, we walked up the road a short bit just past the gate and took a left and bushwhacked through the trees to reach the grassy slope of Mt Helen.

The Class 3 traverse was fun. More technical than Quandary's West Ridge, and longer. There were a few class 4 moves, but nothing extreme or too far beyond Class 3, just needed to make a few adjustments to cross a few spots. The route description and photos were a help.

When working the way up near the summit of Father Dyer, stay to the right, there is more solid rock for holds and steps.

For most of the ridge walking on all the saddles it was a choice to stay on the ridges (and the up and downs) or hang just off them to stay on a straight line to the next low spot. From the low point of the saddle between FDyer and Crystal, it was easier to stay on the ridge to Crystal.

Times:
Total 7 hrs 15 min
TH to Helen: 1 hr 35 min
Helen to FDyer: 2 hr 20 min
FDyer to Crystal: 35 min
Crystal to Peak 10: 50 min

Actual times
5:50 am left upper 4wd TH
7:25 am Mt Helen 7:35
7:50 am low point Helen side of traverse
9:10 am high point on traverse
9:30 am low point on Dyer side of traverse
9:55 am Father Dyer 10:10
10:20 am saddle between Dyer and Crystal
10:45 am Crystal
11:10 am saddle between Crystal and Peak 10
11:35 am Peak 10 11:40
12:20 pm reached the trail that crosses the east ridge of Peak 10
12:45 pm Francie's Cabin
12:50 pm road split
1:05 pm TH

Distance: not sure. The Helen-F Dyer-Crystal route is 7.5 round trip, I'm guessing adding Peak 10 added .5 to .75 miles. So a rough estimate of 8+ miles.
