I was going to take a hiatus from 14ers.com because everytime I post here, I have to listen to jimmie rustlers complain about mistakes I made almost 7years ago. They must have all forgotten their previous mistakes, or only hike in the summer. Then I am belittled because I didn't post enough info on the cross, , since when was climbing a mountain an automatic pre-req to posting conditions, snow depth data, windspeeds and other meteorological info on the internet? People say my posts wreak of overconfidence, but until you ski or climb with me, how will you know? I would never drop into something steep without confidence. If you aren't confident, then it makes not sense to attempt something. Still love the site and the great people on it, and appreciate the advice of those whom possess superior experience and skills to my own.
That being said, I had this over on TGR, but feel some members may appreciate it here. Here's some nice high 30's to 40 deg skiing. Let me know if you have any further questions on conditions.
I came back from Chamonix for work, that was delayed, Click on the TR here: CHX
I have some other photos from Little Bear, Nokhuloir, and Mt. Zirkel traverse, so if there's interest let me know and I will post a TR.
Last week I headed up Tigwon road with my sights set for Holy Cross. The road is an 8 mile approach. I met some NOVA snow guides, and hitched a ride up 5 miles and began skinning from the Community House.
Set camp at halfmoon pass and it began to snow. I recently came off a three day epic ski, so I drank and ate a little and quickly passed out, sleeping for about 16 hours.
An alpine start of 10 a.m. began the following day. I was excited that about 6" of new snow had fallen with minimal wind overnight.
Skinned/postholed up the North ridge and summited around 2p.m. The cross looking fine:
Dropped in and made a few ski cuts up top. There were some small pockets of windslab, but otherwise the snow was blower on top of a solid spring base. The skiing was great:
Skied out the exit and enjoyed some spring snow with a little bit of powder on top.
Picked my way through some narrow rocky chutes back to the creek
Climbed up halfmoon and went to sleep satisfied.
Skied out the next morning and bought the NOVA guides some beer.
A bit of unsolicited advice – don’t bring up the stuff from years ago if you don’t want it to follow you. You’ve done some pretty impressive stuff recently, and clearly have accumulated some solid experience and skills. Starting of the TR with a self–righteous paragraph is just going to ignite the same people to give you crap again.
That aside – nice work! Enjoyed the video – that snow looked pretty nice!
watched the vid, looked like you had just exited the heli skiing a huge french vanilla AK line with PERFECT pow, wow must have been a blast! By the way, don’t worry what other people on here thing about you lol
I watched your video and just had to say 4/14/2015 3:16pm
Haven’t you learned from your mistakes seven years ago? I also felt your trip report didn’t have enough meteorological data.
Just kidding! A good friend once told me: "if you are posting on the internet and you are not pissing off anyone, you are doing something wrong."
That’s the best Cross pov video I’ve ever seen, and it looks like you skied it in perfect conditions. Four hours to summit and a super strong ski! Nice work Waffles, keep posting!
Seriously though, excellent work in the mountains during this trip. I watched your video the other night and fell asleep dreaming about skiing the cross in pow!
Ameristat, excuse me, didn’t mean to sound so self–righteous. Others bring it up in everyone of my solicitations for climbing partners and it’s getting old... It’s only the internet though, 8) Cheers.
