Uncompahgre south ridge from Nellie Creek

On Monday, we went to the San Juan's for two nights of snow camping and the summit attempt of Uncompahgre Peak. From the winter TH we hike up to the area of the summer TH where we set up camp. On Tuesday was the summit attempt and the weather could not have been more perfect. Mid 30’s, no wind and clear blue skies. We had 3100ft of climbing while breaking a new trail under deep blue skies. The summer route to the summit was to dangerous in some areas (avalanche) so we had to make our own route. We got to 13,500ft just below the steep section where we would have to traverse across an area with a large Cornice across the ridge. The photo with the arrows shows the only route we could have taken. After studying the route and all the options, we decided that it was to dangerous to attempt traverse under the Cornice. We headed back to camp knowing we made the right decision and having an awesome day in the mountains. We woke up Wed morning with new snow and it snowing all the way down.

Good call.     2014-03-28 19:51:33
Sometimes you have to be prepared to walk away. The mountain isn't going anywhere and you'll have plenty more chances.

That area has stopped many winter/ski attempts. Still a great area to visit
