Quandary - East Ridge on Black Friday

Eight of us (and joined part way by one friend who had to leave early to work) made the summit. We made the summit in a little over three hours. The winds were really high (estimated 50 to 60 mph) on the summit so no one stuck around long. It was six hours round trip back to the parking area on the corner of the 851. The 851 was still drivable right to the parking by the TH but we had to push out one Subaru which got stuck as we were hiking out so I recommend parking at the big lot just off the main road (hwy 9). The trail was totally packed down and slippery in spots above tree line. Most of our group wore micro spikes and was glad we did but three members had none and did OK. We all carried snow shoes but did not use them. Off the packed down trail the snow was quite deep. Above tree line the snow was wind blown and icy in a few spots.

We were also joined by Nellie the dog who had no issues with the temps (10 deg at the TH at 7 AM) and around zero on the summit with high winds.

Yup big winds on the summit and up high. Nellie seemed to be enjoying herself except maybe right on the summit.

Tough Dog!     2013-12-01 21:35:40
Passed you guys on our way down on Friday. I was thinking how miserable the dog must have been...good to know she toughed it out. Serious wind up high, right? Great day though; way better than fighting crowds at Wal-Mart!
