Boys Life Magazine- My Scout Troop is featured in it!
Troop 88 Parker Colorado: Feature article in August issue of Boys Life Magazine
The story goes: My son Colton was working on the Eagle required Communications Merit badge. (He is now a Silver Palm Eagle Scout.) Requirement 7a says to write a letter to the editor of a magazine or newspaper. Colton wrote into Boys Life about the annual 14er hike I lead for the troop each year. He explained how it related to the teachings of Boys Scouts and basically "checked that box" and moved on.
Well fast forward a year and I get an email from the editor of Boys Life asking me if I was planning on doing the hike again last year and if so could they send a photographer along... well ghee let me think.. YES!!! All the time the magazine is very non commital. "We need lots of backlog material" and "no promises we will ever use it", etc, etc
So another year later, now 2 years since the original letter, my Troop is on the cover and the feature article in Boys Life.. Pretty COOL (I think)

I know some of the details are not 100% accurate and you may disagree with some of the article, but overall I think its a great piece and pretty cool that it started with a simlple letter to the editor by a 13 year old kid.
We will be heading up to climb Sherman as a Troop this coming Saturday so if you see us on the trail say hi.

Once upon a time, when I was on the faculty of the Air Academy, I was both the OIC of the Cadet Mountaineering Club and active with the resident Scout Troop (79). These positions resulted largely because my Navy experience qualified me as an expert at knot tying -- an art sorely in need among the Zoomies!
Although we lead some great Scout outings into Northern Arizona and into the Colorado wilderness, it never seems to have crossed our minds to lead the Scouts up any of the Fourteeners. Maybe we weren‘t sure that it could be safely done. Clearly, we were wrong -very wrong. You just proved that, with proper training and leadership, it can be done!
Congratulations to you and the Scouts for bagging both Grays and Torreys (in a single outing) and for the excellent (outstanding actually) resulting coverage that appeared in the venerable Boys' Life! Keep up the good work and best of luck on climbing Ole William Tecumseh!

I commend you for leading, teaching and mentoring our youth. This is the best trip report I have read on 14ers.com. What a great opportunity for young people to be challenged and to grow.
Thanks to both of you, I appreciate the kind words. I really enjoy both hiking 14ers and teaching the boys so its a nice combo. We have been doing this event for over 6 years now.
How awesome! Thanks for the inspiration. I have an 11-year-old new Scout (Troop 457, Denver/Arapahoe) and a 9-year-old Webelos (Pack 559, same). Can't wait to share your story and pictures with them. They've been up one 14er so far (Sherman) and we're hoping to go up either Democrat or Quandary this coming weekend - but just as a family. I'm training to be an ASM in my older son's troop and perhaps we can do a 14er trip sometime.
I'm a Troop Leader from Chicago and we've been trying to script our own High Adventure outing to CO for Hiking and back country camping. So far a no-go with the Committee.. But now I'm commited more than ever.
