 The broken mountain

7/27/2013: Pyramid Peak

14,018'

After now climbing most of the hardest 14ers, I'm still unmoved in my opinion that their difficulty is in the most part overrated and overhyped. However, Pyramid is the only of the Class 4 mountains that warrants some of the hype. I also have some substantial disagreement with the status quo as to how the peaks should be ordered in difficulty. Let me summarize below:

---(newest finding) Pyramid is the most difficult 14er. I realized half way up the boulderfield that my helmet was left in my car. I regretted it the rest of the time. Pyramid is not objectively as difficult as Capitol or Little Bear, but you have to remain alert the entire time and it has a pretty sketchy section of loose steep dirt from the boulderfield up to the ridge and for that reason it gets my vote as the most difficult 14er (for now - I'll see about Mount Wilson next week)
---Crestone Peak is more difficult than Crestone Needle (more difficult physically and technically in my opinion)
---South Maroon is (much) more difficult than North Maroon (North is a walk in the park by comparison)
---Challenger is more difficult than Kit Carson (I don't really see the debate here). In fact - descending Challenger may have been the most difficult part of any 14er I've ever encountered.
---Longs Peak is still amazing.

Now for some photos:

These are actually rambis_21's pics. Same that shot the video he linked.

Note that zephyr_pelicante does not explicitly support or endorse the usage of country music and strongly encourages the viewer to mute the video.

Ticking them off. From the sounds of the first paragraph, you should start checking out non-standard routes. ”Hype” no longer.

on the country music! Love it! Nice pics. I thought Pyramid was a nice challenge and a fun mountain - excited to give the bells a shot in a few weeks.

We ran into your trio descending while we were on our way up. We talked about the fact that it was my 50th also and my climbing partner's 4th. No doubt it was the most physically demanding 14er I have done to date. I have no desire to repeat it.

I was paranoid going up this one but found Maroon peak harder than this, nevertheless a great mountain!
