 Stony Pass Hardrock 100 Style

Jura Knob
7 miles
2000 feet

After a rather disappointing trip into Vestal Basin Ben G and I set out to blow off some steam. Jura Knob fit the bill, so we rocketed up the Pass Creek trail and by Engineer Mountain. Clouds were building but not threatening so we ran across the saddle and sped up the mellow south ridge of Jura Knob. We met a man with two dogs near the false summit. He said he couldn't encourage his dogs up one of the steps in the ridge. Soon after I saw what he meant, it was a 5 foot 6 inch step in the ridge which prevented easy passage, I would call this move difficult class 4, it was much harder going up than down. Once on top of the step it was an easy walk to the summit. We really wanted pizza and beer at Avalanche so we ran almost the whole way down passing many wildflower enthusiasts. If you have not been there the meadow below Engineer is one of the best places for wildflowers.

"Stony Pass Peak" 13165
Green Mountain 13049
8 miles
3000 feet

After refueling with a Thai pizza and Treasure Mountain ale we camped out near the Cunningham Gulch aid station. Our goal was to beat the top runners into the high basin and watch the runners from the saddle between Green and Stony Pass Peak. We followed the well marked course up the steep terrain and watched the top runners descend from Little Giant. Joe Grant and Sebastian were well in front of everybody at this point. Joe would later drop and Sebastian won in just over 24 hours.

We slowly made our way to the pass watching runners as they ascended. We dropped our packs at the saddle and ran up Green, an indistinguishable ridge bump. Then we enjoyed a growler of Treasure Mountain while encouraging runners up the slopes. After a time we dropped down and around Stony Pass Peak and hurried up the summit. The skies darkened and most of the runners had gone by so we decided it was time run down the Stony Pass road.

Growler at 13k with the hardrockers goin by...

Very nice pics or it may just be hard to mess that up with the San Juans, either way, what kind of camera?

FOTM - I use a Canon SX160 camera, I do think it is hard to mess up shots in the San Juans

Madbuck - I'm glad someone recognized a runner, I added another pic of Rob, pic 26.

... in orange shirt looks like 14ers.com member tmahon (Ted Mahon).

Nice job on capturing these runners as they go by. I paced a friend last year and was amazed at the scenery up there.
