Sneffels - Yankee Basin Trail Head

We departed the lower trailhead parking lot at 8:10 a.m. The conditions were partly cloudy after a rain storm the night before. The trails were clear and the flowers were in full bloom up to the upper trailhead. Trails were basically dry to the upper trail head to the base of the slope shown in Photo 14 of this site. The slope to the first col was stable with more rocks to get a footing on to the left of center. Upon turning left off the col, we spoke to a number of hikers descending who reported snow up the main gully that was slick. Others recommended the gully to the left which we took. The left gully was a bit loose footing at the lower portion and towards the top we encountered snow. We hooked a left at the base of the snow field through a crevice through a hole in the rocks (about 20') which was an easy climb up and through. The route around proved to be dry and a clear path to the summit by about 10:30 a.m. We descended the same way we came up but passed the hole in the rock and the crevice following the advise of other hikers and were able to navigate a steep but navigable dry climb down through the rocks just past both gullies and snowfields. The snowfields were much smaller, I would add, than reported on July 5 or 6th. All was good!

You stated: ”We descended the same way we came up but passed the hole in the rock and the crevice following the advise of other hikers and were able to navigate a steep but navigable dry climb down through the rocks just past both gullies and snowfields” - Will you be kind enough and provide clearer description of what the other hikers advised you before you climbed down? Cheers!
