 Happy Birthday America the Beautiful

I had originally planned on riding in The Firecracker 50 for the 4th but Allison is dealing with an injury that makes riding super far pretty painful so we opted to go skiing instead. We woke up at 4am in Edgewater and made coffee. Loaded up the car an got on the road. We made decent time to the Longs Peak trailhead and were hiking at 6:30. I set a pretty fast pace from the get go and we were at Chasm Lake in 2 hours. The hike around the lake was mosquito choked and tedious through the large talus. The mosquitoes were thick on the north side of the lake and sometimes it felt as if we were under attack. The swarms feasted on our blood. We finally made it to the snow and switched over to ski boots and crampons. We took the break as a chance to refuel and had our turkey sandwiches. Lambs slide was in perfect condition for cramponing. We had originally planned on skiing Flying Dutchman but it just didn't look like that much fun. The upper bowl didn't look in and the steep rappel looked like a double rappel. We opted for the easy route. At the top of the Slide we headed for the loft and left our skis at the top of the snow. From there we hiked over and across to the summit of Mt Meeker. Such a beautiful perch high above the plains. After a few pics we headed back to the snow and the real reason we came to the park on this day.

Dropping in above the Flying Dutchman was sweet and we traversed and turned our ways across the steep remnant of snow over to entrance of Lambs Slide. Once in the slide we enjoyed perfect corn and "polenta". The views were dazzling, one feels very small when skiing under the Diamond Wall of Longs.... more words and pics here Mt Meeker 13,911' Lamb's Slide 7/4/2013 - Happy Independence Day
