 Bierstadt - Guanella Pass Trailhead

I hiked up Mt. Bierstadt early AM 6/5/2013. I left from Fort Collins around 4:50AM, on the trail by 7:15AM. Early season lower altitude trail conditions - hiking down to the creek crossing was pretty soupy with the mud where the boardwalks don't cover. BRING YOUR GAITERS! After the creek crossing, things cleaned up a bit, although there are some random winter melt streams that run on or along the path that can make things slippery.

If you're looking at hiking some 14ers early season, you should probably already have some traction devices for your boots. Do yourself a favor and get some Microspikes or Yaktrax! Best $ I've ever spent in a long while.

That being said, no snowshoes required today - I put on my Kahtoola spikes right around 12000 feet - equally important to keep traction on the snow and the mud! Get an early start - earlier the better! The snow and mud will still be relatively frozen and MUCH easier to walk on

The Guanella Pass road was VERY foggy driving up this morning, and I couldn't actually see any of the mountains from the parking lot. Thankfully, things cleared up before I got to the summit and we got a full 360° view with great sunshine!

Skiing?     2013-06-06 11:45:18
Do you have any pictures of the west ridge? A group of us was thinking about doing a ski descent this Sunday. Thanks!

I do have some pictures that'll show what you're looking for. I will say the snow itself is either icy and crunchy in the early morning or turns to slush by the early afternoon, pretty typical late season conditions.

I will post the pics when I get home from work

Sawtooth     2013-06-12 18:18:40
I posted a picture of the Sawtooth - someone asked me about it. It looked passable to me. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to hike to Evans and back, and I didn't have a shuttle set up in advance. Next time!
