Dragon Tail Couloir - Flattop Mountain

Dragon Tail Couloir on Flattop provided a short easy approach moderate snow climb with good conditions on Sunday. The hike in was a boot pack to the base of the climb but do stay off the lakes, they've gone to mush. The climb was shaded due to the overcast, hence no mashed potatoes for us but a bit of sun would have made our 5 a.m. start too late for sure. There were a few soft spots and we found good conditions for kicking steps. The snow was hard enough to take a step but we did find that an extra second or two of loading made for a solid step for the next fellow in line. We avoided the runnel that comes down from the top and found no ice along the way.

We chose the left branch, having done the right many years ago. The cornice is not of consequence but the wind and blowing graupel at the top made for a bit of a cold exit. The trip off Flattop . . . well those who have been there can guess it was a load of fun so we just dug in, busted straight down through the trees, veering left enough to not cliff out and made for Bear Lake.

Do you have a guess as to how many more weeks Dragon Tail will be in?

No idea, but . . .     05/22/2013 00:13
there is a good bit of snow in it now and I didn't touch a rock the whole way up, but I don't know how that route rots out as I've only done it in the shape it is in now . . . Have at it while it lasts!

Another nice one.     05/21/2013 23:21
I always enjoy your reports, Bob. Thanks for posting this. I hope I live long enough to do all that you have put up!

What 6 days can do     05/25/2013 18:08
Kiefer and I went for this just 6 days prior to your climb. Crap snow and wet slide avys! Your report just rubs it in that I need to get back there soon!

I got the mashed potatoes my first time nearly a decade ago, hope you both got back in there for the right stuff!
