 Stony Mountain Sunset Ski

Calc and I drove down to the San Juan’s last weekend to meet up with Brian and Ben for a weekend of skiing in Yankee Boy Basin. Plans of a high camp were discussed but with the road open to the upper mine the access was pretty good and a plan to car camp was a good alternative. While Calc and I had never been to this area before, Ben and Brian had some experience and thus some objectives. After the long car ride we set up camp and decided to take a stroll up the road to check snow conditions and stretch around 4:30.

Here is a shot of the ramp we booted from teakettle later in the week. Couloir somwhat hidden in this photo.

A nice ramp appeared to lead to the top of Stony and the snow was starting to feel worthwhile from a skiing perspective so we all skinned the apron and booted the ramp.

it was steep but this photo makes it look alittle steeper than is actually was. Calc took a measurement at one point that was in the 50's but certainly not consistant 50's.

Topping out at about 7:15 we got a good view of the surroundings and a mostly cloudy sunset.

Skiing off the top were a few good turns that were a good preview of what was to come.

Watching Ben and Brian cheesing as they skied down the apron in powder at sunset was sweet All expectations were exceeded and we cruised back to the cars effortlessly.

Thanks for reading and thanks everyone for putting up the great trip reports this spring. Have fun and be safe out there!

Nice Elliot!     2013-04-30 21:09:17
Glad the snow conditions worked for you guys to nab the sun-set-ski!

Did you manage to hold on to your wallet this trip?

Rick I held on to the wallet this time! We all missed you on this trip including The Broville Grill! The Broville Grill had a run in with the shot gun while unattended by the grill master...

Nice work, looked like great snow! That line has been on the list for 5 years and I haven't gotten around to it yet...maybe this year

Awesome line     2013-05-01 10:39:47
You guys nailed it! Sweet route and descent.

Stony strikes me as pissed off for its relatively limited height. Every single aspect of that pile of rock has a rad snow line. You guys look south from the summit? So much terrain!

Nicest line in YBB     2013-05-02 07:56:03
sweet view, sweet line, good times. Only thing missing was the alpenglow, which was out for all of 30 seconds.
