Glopfest 2013 - San Luis Peak

Crew: Rob (Logling), Me
Stats: 13miles 5200ft Vertical RT
Route: Climb and ski of the most West Yawner Gully from Equity Mine
Time: Start 4am Back at car at 3pm (11 hours RT)

A last minute decision was made Saturday morning to go climb and ski San Luis peak on Sunday. Rob and I made it up the mostly dry road to the TH just below the Equity mine at around 9pm. The alarms were set for 3:15am and we were on the trail and moving by 4am. A little route finding error had us on the Northern end of the pass at around sunrise.

Rob topping out on the pass

A look at the dust layer buried beneath a thick windslab on a 25 degree NE facing slope
The result was an ECTX

The skiing from the pass was some of the best i've had all year

Very soon it was time to start skinning again

We made good progress skinning up the majority of the Yawner

Looking West

Soon enough it was time to booter

Crampons would have made the ascent a lot faster as the snow was pretty firm in places

Getting bored with the snow we hopped on the ridge

Wetterhorn and Uncompagre are looking nice

Then it was just a short stroll to the summit

Topped out on the summit at around 11am

Ski descent number 31 for both of us

Hung around for a little bit and it was time to click in. Skiing directly off of the summit is always a treat

Getting Some

All too soon it was time to put the skins back on and ensue what would be one of the most memorable skins of my life...

After a lot of this...

and this...

We finally made it to the top of the pass

After that it was just a fast pleasant ski back to the car. Solid day with a solid partner. Thanks for a good day Rob!

Refer to Prakash's field manual on how to deal with the glob creatures north of San Luis Pass (its listed under ”More Wallowing”)

Nice one guys!     04/24/2013 18:27
Glop, schmop. Just carry the last piece of an old bar of any wax, it'll work. We did have a greta time battling the glop on San Luis... as Prakash so ably documented.

Nice work! Some really fun turns after the last storm cycle - creamy goodness. I was surprised by the coverage in YBB as well. Not to shabby given the first 90% of the 'Winter'.
